The Big Lunch 2011.

June 19, 2011 Leave a comment

Putting up the bunting on the Saturday on a warm sunny afternoon looked promising for our big day.

Sunday dawned cool and cloudy with rain threatening  – and it did during the afternoon.

But, were we detered from having a good time – not a bit of it, we just raised umbrella’s and carried on enjoying the company of one another, the food, music and community spirit.

Over 150 residents from Ellerton, Bond and Dennan Road enjoyed our second ‘have lunch with your neighbours’ event – The Big Lunch – organised by the Ellerton and Bond Road [incorporating Dennan Road] Residents’ Association on Sunday June 5th.
A section of Ellerton and adjoining Bond Road were closed off to traffic and cars moved allowing residents to ‘take over the streets.’
Whilst neighbours had lunch together communally entertained by a jazz group, the children had the freedom of their street and enjoyed riding their bikes, scooters and skateboards safely and playing football and even cricket.

There were several activities for younger children including a fancy dress competition for various age groups.
For the adults there was a cake competition which attracted many entrants – and the cakes were later enjoyed by all,
a well supported raffle and a ‘guess the cake weight’ competition.
Many people brought extra food for the sharing table which ranged from good old party food to Chinese, Asian and Middle Eastern food which was delicious.

Some of the cake entries.
The raffle.
Keeping cool.
Fancy dress under 6 winner: Ben Gerrard.
Some children’s games.
Fancy dress winner over 6: Keiron Beardmore.
Residents enjoying the cakes after the competition.
Guess the weight cake.
Oh, is it raining – we hadn’t noticed – having too much fun.
People to thank.
Stack and Bonner for their sponsorship and sign posting – and to Sophia for organising this.
Paul Johnston and Nick Kilby for their very generous donation towards the event.
Debbie for ‘hook a duck’ and those who manned the supervision rota.
Rosemary for the boozy ‘guess the weight cake’ and those who entered the cake competition – whose cakes we all enjoyed later.
Simon and Christina who lent us their band new gazeebo.
Residents who lent or gave bunting.
EBRRA is already thinking about 2012 with The Big Lunch again but also the Olympics, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
We are always pleased to hear from any resident who would like to get involved with the residents association – in a big or small way by joining the committee or just being a representative for their ‘local home area’ or a helper as and when required for our events.

Surbiton Hospital August start.

June 6, 2011 Leave a comment

PLANS for a new health care centre and primary school on the Surbiton Hospital site are moving forward, as it is announced that building work is expected to start in August.

Under the plans, which have been put together by the NHS and the council, the Ewell Road site will be demolished to make way for a healthcare centre providing a base for up to eight existing GP practices as well as outpatient care, community services and a pharmacy.

The Big Lunch – this Sunday – see you there.

May 11, 2011 Leave a comment

Sunday June 5th 12:00 to 5:00 pm.

Owing to the current financial situation we have been unable to gain funding for our Big Lunch community event this year.
We will therefore have to make a small charge per household which will be a minimum of £5 to help cover the cost of organising the event and having the jazz group again.
You may of course give more which would be gratefully appreciated.

We have already called on – or returning to – those housholds who attended last year and giving them a card with a unique number for the prize draw to be held during the day.
We are also delivering the front garden competition cards at the same time.

You can drop your £5 (plus) for The Big Lunch into numbers 33 or 41 Bond Road and we will deliver your numbered card.

Road closures.

We will again be closing Ellerton Road between Dennan Road and Tolworth Park Road and Bond Road from Ellerton Road to the bend from 10 am to 7 pm.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause residents but trust you will help by moving your carsby 10 am please so that setting up may safely commence.

We are trying to organise tables and some chairs as last year – but watch this space for an update on this.
We may have to rely on you bringing your own.

As last year it is bring your own food, plate and cutlery and those able to bring extra for sharing – especially foreign/exotic – would be very welcome and much appreciated.

We will supply refuse bags and bags for recycling items.

Fancy dress competition with three age groups:  0 – 6,  7 – 13,  14 – …

We would be grateful for any items you have for the raffle, these can be dropped off at 33 Bond Road for storage.

Wet weather.

The Corner House have kindly offered the use of their venue in the event of bad weather.
We are most grateful to them for this offer.

Help/things required.

If anyone has bunting and/or a portable pop up gazebo they would loan us this this would be most appreciated.
And, any help you can offer on the day – setting up, selling raffle tickets, clearing up, etc would also be most apprecited.
Please let us know in advance at

Email contact.

It makes it much easier to inform and communicate with our residents if we have your email address.
If you have not yet supplied this please do so at

If you can spare a little time and join the EBRRA committee to be part of the RA do please let us know on the above email address.
